Why Every Executive Team Needs a Business Developer as Their Constant Sparring Partner

In many companies, departments run like precise clockwork. Each one focuses on its goals: quarterly results, annual plans, KPIs. Colleagues work hard inside the hamster wheel – but that’s exactly why the outside view is often missing: What is the competition doing? Which technologies could disrupt us? Which new players are already preparing to enter the market?

The company at that point is like a swimmer: head in the water, powerful strokes toward the goal, only lifting up quickly for a breath before continuing. But what if a shark is ahead? Or a storm is brewing?

This is where the Business Developer comes in. He moves like a motorboat alongside the swimmer, scanning the field and whispering: “In 20 meters, danger lies ahead – change your course. A storm is coming – adjust your pace. Now the wave is here – use it to move faster.” And this doesn’t mean being present every single day, but rather stepping in at the right moment with the right advice – and, if desired, actively supporting projects or change management initiatives.

The advantage: management, board, and employees can focus much more strongly on their daily goals because they know someone is at their side who also keeps an eye on what happens outside the company.

A Business Developer is far more than a project manager. He is the constant sparring partner for executives and boards, spotting opportunities and risks early and providing direction when it matters most. Growth and transformation are not a sprint – they are a long-distance swim. And without the motorboat alongside, it quickly becomes dangerous.
